It is with joy we the WORLD CLASSICAL MUSIC OUTREACH has come up with the list of some chorale groups in Nigeria that are hitting it strong both in classical music and there native compositions.In Nigeria as in many other countries a lot of choral groups in Nigeria have proven to be some of the best on the African continent and have won various international competitions to buttress this. now in Nigeria choral music is not restricted to the church alone thanks to the activities of various choral groups in the country. So we conducted a survey on social media and with a group of classical music heads to find out some of the choral groups which are actually worthy of note RIGHT NOW  and the list is not by ranking  and choirs featured here are not placed in terms of importance.

  MUSON















Though the MUSON School of Music was established in the year 1989 due to the passion of individuals who wanted to see the growth of classical music in Nigeria, its famous choir however had its first performance in the year 1995. The MUSON choir is one of the most iconic choir groups in Nigeria with international awards to their name and is directed by Sir Emeka Nwokedi.

 The Lagos City Chorale












The Lagos City Chorale is one of the most outstanding choral groups in Nigeria with several international medals and awards to their name. This magnificent singing group was founded by Senator Lere Adesina and Sir Emeka Nwokedi in the year 1988 and since that moment onward it has been upward growth.

Laz Ekwueme Chorale

 

The Laz Ekwueme Chorale is one of the most renowned choral groups in Nigeria. It was founded in the year 1974 by Professor Lazarus Ekwueme after he returned to Nigeria to accept a position at the newly created Department of Music at the University of Lagos. The group regularly performed works by Professor Laz Ekwueme who was one of the early Nigerian composers to produce successful musical syncretism of African choral work using western forms and techniques.

ENDLESS PRAISE CREW MUSIC CHORALE IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING MUSIC CHORALE IN NIGERIA THAT HAVE TRAVELED TO SOME PARTS OF THE WORLD FOR PERFORMANCES.IT WAS FORMED IN 2017 AFTER THERE PERFORMANCE OF ENDLESS PRAISE MUSIC BOOK BY EKE CHIJINDU FAVOUR HEDGES, ONE OF THE BEST CLASSICAL COMPOSERS OF OUR TIME. THIS IS THE CHORALE THAT PERFORMED THE ARRIVAL OF DONALD TRUMP OF U.S PRESIDENT, THE MOZART MEMORIAL SONG(GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD), THE HANDEL MEMORIAL (HALLELUJAH TO THE LORD). , THE HAVE ALSO PERFORM IN NIGERIAN INTERNATIONAL CHORALE MUSIC FESTIVAL, THE CHORALE IS UNDER THE DIRECTOR OF EKE CHIJINDU FAVOUR HEDGES (COMPOSER), THE CHOIR HAVE THERE ANNUAL MUSIC CONCERT EVERY OCT/NOV YEARLY IN NIGERIA.  THE CHOIR BECAME POPULAR AFTER RELEASING THERE TRADITIONAL SONG TITLED BURU ALLELUIA WHICH IS MAKING WAVE IN NIGERIA.

 The Mountain Top Chorale

 The Mountain Top Chorale was instituted on the 13^th of March 2013 with a number of 10 dedicated singers. The choir has however grown to a fuller and larger choral group who have performed internationally. In 2015 the choir participated in the 9th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival & Competition in Wernigerode (Germany).

Abuja Choral Ensemble

The Abuja Choral Ensemble was created in the year 2003 and it prides itself on a robust repatoire ranging from classical to contemporary songs and it exists to promote excellence in classical music.

The Asaph choir

The Asaph choir is a unique choir, in the sense that it’s only made up of young singers within the age range of 16-22 years. The choir is often applauded for it’s beautiful renditions of various styles of music which range from classical pieces to contemporary songs. The Asaph is directed by Dominic Etim a seasoned classical musician.

 The J Clef Chorale

The J Clef Chorale was founded by composer Jude Nwankwo on the 7th of September, 2010.  The choir’s aim is to promote good choral singing among youths within Nsukka and its environs. The membership of the chorale includes singers/choir directors in Nsukka including staff and students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. 

Trinity Chorale

Trinity Chorale is barely 2 years old but is already making a name for itself in the choral music scene. The group was founded in the year 2016 by music director Nnamdi Amadi. The goup has gone on to perform at different events. Host its own concert and recently won the Lagos Sub Zone of the First Viola Competition.

 Chorale De Magnifique

 Chorale De Magnifique was founded in the year 1993 by Ike Eseka in collaboration with Benneth Ogeiwi, Michael Dalmeida, Magdalene Akonor (nee Ogbeiwi), Patience Bello, and Dominic Malagu. Choral De Magnifique is still standing today under the able leadership of Ike Eseka and is considered one of the top notch choir groups in Nigeria.
